A new place for artistic experimentation
Laurent Marthaler is transforming a former car garage into an artistic laboratory. Halfway between a creative space and a contemporary art gallery, the place will host a program of artist residencies, as well as exhibitions.
The gallery owner will offer selected artists residencies of several weeks to allow them to invest the space and make it their own. Once the residency is completed, a vernissage will be held to exhibit the works produced.
For each exhibition, the gallery will publish a catalog produced by Studio Frédéric Held, which will contain texts by Swiss art historian Yves Guignard and photographs by Julien Gremaud.
Tamara Alves on the Riviera
Portuguese visual artist and illustrator Tamara Alves was the first artist to participate in the new residency program of Laurent Marthaler Contemporary Gallery. She was present on the Riviera from January 30 to February 13, 2023. She was inspired by the atmosphere of Montreux and created new works that will be presented at the inauguration of the place on Thursday, April 6, 2023.
Currently based in Lisbon, Tamara Alves is known for her committed work and her passion for urban aesthetics, two characteristics that guided the gallery owner's choice. As part of the residency, she has been invited to cover the walls of the gallery with original large-scale frescoes, a technique she has been practicing in the public space for several years. This in situ work will be accompanied by an exhibition of smaller works created in connection with the residency.
Tamara Alves
Tamara Alves (born 1983) is a Portuguese visual artist and illustrator based in Lisbon. Fascinated by the aesthetics of the street and the urban context, her work translates into monumental frescoes in public spaces.
In her work, Tamara Alves invokes a universe of human and animal (female) figures interacting with the natural landscape and objects with a strong symbolic charge. She invites the viewer to embrace feelings as a wild and untamed driving force in a universe where love can be the result of an impact or an accident growing inside us like a wild flower.
