This exhibition marks the launch of Laurent Marthaler Contemporary's “Emerging Artists” program, dedicated to promoting young Swiss artists.
“Momentum of Life” highlights the work of Swiss artist Anton Hasler, who celebrates human creative energy in the face of technosolutionism. Hasler will present works produced during a six-month residency in Berlin, where he explored the interactions between creativity and artificial intelligence. A book of his visual research and a short film about the experience will also be presented.
In recent years, artificial intelligence has gained importance, becoming more accessible and promising to revolutionize creation. This evolution sparks particular interest among artists, traditionally seen as the guardians of the creative act. Anton Hasler, who benefited from a six-month residency in Berlin, from January to July 2024, granted by the State of Fribourg, explored how AI could be integrated into his art. He quickly realized that this technology threatened the very essence of his creativity.
For Hasler, "Momentum of Life" symbolizes a return to human dimensions, such as intuition and emotion, which AI cannot understand or reproduce. Inspired by Berlin’s architecture and vibrant energy, he uses vivid colors and dynamic figures to celebrate the vital impulse in deconstructed compositions.
The exhibition features a dozen paintings and drawings that illustrate the evolution of his artistic approach during his residency in Berlin. Hasler invites us to rethink the place of human creativity in the face of technological advances and asserts that the essence of art lies in the balance between technical innovation and personal expression — an essential balance for preserving artistic authenticity.
